Looking for Alaskalooking-for-alaska-205x300 Looking for Alaska {Book Review}

by John Green

This Pulitzer Prize winning novel is a story about a high school student in search of his own “Great Perhaps“.

Miles (aka Pudge) dreams of a more interesting life, of changing who he is, of becoming who he wants to be. To do so, he believes the answer is for him to go to a boarding school, away from everything familiar. By embracing change and trying new things, he discovers, experiences, grows and eventually matures.

This is definitely an amazing read for teens. I can see how this story would be helpful for many young readers who are going through some hard times, are feeling like they aren’t in control of their lives, and want a change. I love how John Green is using some of Pudge’s school lessons to help him deal with the situation he is going through. I also love how the teachers treat the students like people and not children – something many teens struggle to achieve. While I can definitely argue they’re given too much freedom at this school, it’s entirely besides the point of the book.

Without giving away any important parts of the story, I can at least safely say that it’s not a happy-go-lucky story, but you will still be glad you read it. I do not recommend this story for pre-teens or tweens BUT that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to read it. I would recommend the parent give it a read first as there are sexual situations a parent might not want their child reading about.

You don’t have to take my word for it when I say that this is a great read… It’s won a few awards!
